Typhoon Lagoon - A Water Park Paradise

Florida Guide > Disney General

Having been to Florida for ten years running this amazingly was our first visit to a water park. We decided to go on a Monday as according to the theme park schedule we had this was a less busy day. So it proved, as the numbers were comfortable throughout the park and most importantly in the water. We ventured in and found a small white sandy area not overlooking the surf pool and collapsed onto the sun-loungers.

The rocking boat on the top of Mount Mayday the feature of Typhoon Lagoon was clearly visible in the bright blue sky. Firstly, down to the surf pool where a huge wave machine generates massive waves every 90 seconds knocking you flat if you are brave enough to swim to the front. We ventured about halfway around 50 yards from the source. Off went the klaxon and a ten foot wave appeared from no-where. Seconds later it hits you and you surface surrounded by baseball caps, scrunchies, sunglasses and various sizes of small children! But do you get out? No way, bring on the next one!

Being less brave than my two kids i wandered off to castaway creek a meandering stream that circumnavigates the park. Jump on a passing rubber ring and off you go to gently float around the whole park topping up your tan. This bought on a thirst and best value was the all day cup which for $10 you refill at one of the refilling stations throughout the park. Great value with thirsty kids. Then on to the big kids slides.

Mayday, Gangplank & Keelhaul falls all brilliant downhill slides for the grown ups and big kids or Ketchakiddee for the little ones. The enclosed slides Hummunga Kowabunga is my favourite and you hurtle down at 30 mph splashing down in the plunge pool arms and legs akimbo.

You can also swim at Shark Reef and as the name implies watch the sharks feed from the safety of a tank behind 3" glass, but you must be over 10 to do this. This was a great family day out and we did stay all day but at a very leisurely pace, for Moms & Dads who want to relax its great. Just point the kids in the direction of the Surf pool and lie back on the white sandy beach with your book & a nice cool drink.
