Safety in Orlando
No one wants their holiday ruined by an accident that can be avoided if care is taken. Here are some things that might seem obvious but not always.
First, children. Children in cars in Florida must have a child seat and be strapped in at all times. Unlike cars in the UK, not all hire cars have child safety locks which dead lock the back doors as we have here so make sure they are well strapped in at all times.
Pools are the greatest threat to a childs safety on holiday. Never leave a child unattended at any time by a pool. Do not even shut your eyes for a sun bathe, they can slip into the water without you even hearing them. They can move so quickly and fall in before you even notice. Never leave a small child with an older child looking after it. Children do not have the same sense of danger and can be easily distracted by some thing else. They only have to look away for a second and a toddler can fall in and by the time they have come to get you the worst could have happened. These are not scare mongering tips, they have ALL HAPPENED in the last year or two in pools. Even in garden ponds in England. Never take glasses or breakable plates round a pool, glass can be unseen and very dangerous if it breaks. All good villas provide plastic beakers and plates for use outdoors.
On the rides in the theme parks, they have height restrictions, and I have seen little children standing on tip toes to try and reach the top of the measure, but please do not give in to them even if they make a fuss. These restrictions are because the rides have straps to hold you in and little ones can slip out of the belt if they are too small – the result then is obvious.
Second, these apply to all holiday makers. Always be aware that the sun is very, very strong in Florida. Always where the strongest sun block and cover up if you feel too hot. You can still burn on a cloudy day. Wear a hat and sunglasses at all times when the sun is out. Make sure to take plenty of liquids through out the day to avoid dehydration. Never cross the road on a red light, even if the road is clear, this is against the law in Florida.
